The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry reduces anxiety, discomfort and pain through medications administered before or during dental procedures. At Titensor Dental we offer a wide range of sedation options and will work with you to determine what works best for your unique situation.

Medications used in sedation dentistry are available in varying strengths and are safe for most healthy patients. There are two main types of sedation: inhalation and oral. Inhalation sedation uses nitrous oxide, better known as laughing gas, in combination with oxygen through a mask placed over your nose. You remain conscious but relaxed during the appointment and the effects wear off quickly, allowing you to drive yourself home afterward. Oral sedation is prescribed pills or liquids that you take prior to your appointment to induce drowsiness. The dentist can control the level of drowsiness and it can also be reversed, ensuring you remain conscious throughout the procedure. Most patients with this form of sedation say they have little or no memory of their procedure when they wake up.

There are a number of benefits to sedation dentistry, most importantly it puts the fear factor out of the picture for many patients. Fear of the dentist is a very common problem, and for some patients it can even be paralyzing. Sedation dentistry allows these patients to relax in the dentist chair, and often they find that even long procedures seem to go by very quickly. Having the ability to relax during dental appointments can make the world of difference to nervous patients and removes a major reason why some people avoid dental treatment altogether.

With sedation dentistry, our patients can have years of dental work done in just one visit. This means that there is no need to schedule multiple appointments for a single procedure, which can save time and money. Plus, it is great for the dentist as well, because sedation dentistry allows them to get more done in less time without having to worry about the patient arousing or waking up during the procedure.

Whether you choose nitrous oxide, oral or deep sedation, we will ask you to bring someone along to drive you home after your appointment. It will usually be several hours before the sedative completely wears off, so it is important to have a ride waiting for you. Most dentists are qualified to administer nitrous oxide, but the other forms of sedation require special training and licensing. If you are interested in sedation dentistry, be sure to look for offices with certified staff and a full list of the risks involved. Also, be sure to review your medical history before the procedure and let the dentist know about any medications you are taking. This way, you can be sure that the sedation is appropriate for your age and health status. This is very important, as some individuals are more sensitive to the sedatives than others.
